When it comes to giving a guitar a ‘New Look’, Fender style guitars must be at the top of the list for those easy to change-out parts. Of course, that also makes it a minefield when trying to avoid scammers fake guitars when buying used. When Leo Fender brought together the first guitar designs in the late 1940s, one of the first choices he made was for the instrument to have a bolt-on neck and easily replaced parts, all in a bid to help with maintenance costs for the hard-working musician. Little did he know that his first commercial guitar design released as the Esquire and Broadcaster (later re-named Telecaster) would continue decades into the future virtually unchanged.

One of the great things about Fender and Fender style guitars is the ability to give the guitar a whole new face-lift by simply changing out the pickguard. In this video we see just how easy that is, and also the many pickguard choices that are available. Telecaster style guitars literally take minutes to change while Stratocaster style guitars take a bit longer due to the removal of pick-ups and controls. One of the areas it’s important to be careful of when choosing a new Pickguard / Scratch Plate, is making sure you have the correct part as body shapes and screw fixings did change over the years… Enjoy!
